THE VALLEY HOSPITAL - CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

New York Initiative

Known throughout northern New Jersey for its medical and technical excellence, The Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, N.J., is a leader in the field of cardiology services. The hospital identified more than 30-percent of Valley's cardiology patients hail from the nearby New York counties of Orange, Sullivan and Rockland.

The Valley Hospital hired Caugherty Hahn Communications, Inc. (CHC) to expand awareness of the accessibility and superior cardiac care among residents of New York - including the extensive and prominent clinical trials conducted by the hospital.

To reach the hospital's goal, CHC outlined a media relations campaign to support marketing efforts in that region and increase awareness of expert cardiology services offered by the hospital.

CHC needed to quickly gain extensive knowledge of all aspects of cardiac care in order to prepare for the campaign. Within two weeks of the campaign's commencement, CHC staff had compiled detailed notes from industry publications and conducted extensive interviews with Valley's physicians, surgeons and medical team.

CHC developed the Cardiac Information Bureau, a vehicle by which Valley Hospital news and announcements are made to local and regional media.

Valley Hospital cardiologists and cardiac surgeons who live or practice in the region are utilized to comment on related local and national news and announcements, such as President Dick Cheney's course of treatment.

To date, CHC has succeeded in placing a letter to the editor in one of the region's largest daily papers, as well as news articles in several local weekly papers, and has secured several local radio and television interviews with Valley cardiologists.

In addition to the New York Initiative, CHC supported the Valley Hospital's marketing campaign by writing several in-depth articles about cardiology for the hospital's external newsletter, Valley Reports, which is sent to consumers throughout northern New Jersey and lower New York State.

Three articles appeared in the summer 2001 edition - Valley Leads the Way in Cardiac Clinical Trials; Valley First in NJ to Perform Revolutionary Radiation Procedure for In-Stent Restenosis; and CURE Clinical Trial: Valley Physician Plays Significant Role - and a fourth - Smoking Can Lead to a Broken Heart - Literally: What Women Should Know About Smoking & Heart Disease - was included in the fall 2001 newsletter.
