Care Plus NJ, INC. and the Community Mental Health Foundation

Changing Perceptions and Creating Hope

Changing perceptions of mental illness and creating hope for mentally ill individuals and their loved ones is the mission of the Community Mental Health Foundation (CMHF), the fundraising arm of Care Plus NJ, Inc. Care Plus NJ is the leading behavioral healthcare organization serving the 70 towns and municipalities of Bergen County, New Jersey, including the county’s suicide hotline.

The Foundation retained Caugherty Hahn Communications, Inc. (CHC) to spearhead its fundraising event—and annual dinner dance and silent auction.

CHC developed a fundraising/image building campaign that included direct marketing and media relations to secure new donors and expanded participation among existing supporters. The Foundation and CHC were confronted with the challenge of increasing charitable contributions during a difficult environment of economic downturn.

“The Courage Awards” was coined by CHC as a connection to fight the stigma typically associated with mental illnesses.
  • More than 240 people attended the event, an increase over the previous year
  • Raised more than $47,000
  • The silent auction drew a wider, more creative range of donors than the previous year.
  • The Board of Directors and staunchest donors were reinvigorated by the event’s success.

In addition to spearheading the Foundation’s annual fundraising event, Care Plus NJ, Inc. retained CHC to assist the organization in communicating its support of a statewide plan for mental health in New Jersey. In conjunction with Care Plus NJ, Lisa Hahn wrote and edited testimony to be given by Joe Masciandaro, President & CEO of Care Plus NJ at a statewide public hearing on mental health. An Op-Ed article was then crafted by CHC and appeared in the Star-Ledger, New Jersey’s largest daily newspaper, expanding public exposure and awareness to the issues.

Care Plus NJ, Inc. is dedicated to dispelling the myths and misconceptions associated with mental illness. CHC worked to bring Care Plus and the Foundation closer to completing that mission, so that people living with mental illness will be able to live and function in communities with dignity and pride.
